06.04.2024 Golden Plover at Noirmont this afternoon MD
High cloud and a fresh to strong southerly wind was the recipe for today's weather.
There were a few hints of migration around the Island today, with the strong southerly winds pushing birds towards the Island. This evening, a Red-rumped Swallow was at La Sente and earlier, A Hoopoe was seen at Portelet this afternoon with the same, or a second being seen at Noirmont later, in the trees behind Warren Farm. Another Hoopoe was photographed at Queen's Valley. A Golden Plover was also at Noirmont and a male Common Redstart was at Portelet, also, the first Yellow Wagtail of the year was at La Sente. Other birds at La Sente included 22 Cattle Egrets, 9 Little Egrets, 3 Swallows, 4 Sand Martins and 8 White Wagtails.
Seen at Sorel Point were 3 House Martins, 14 Linnets, 2 Sparrowhawks and a Peregrine and another 3 House Martins were visiting nest boxes in St Clement.
This morning's counts at Corbiere were well down on yesterday's but included 64 Manx Shearwaters, 10 Guillemots, 6 Brent Geese, 10 Cormorants, 7 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, a Sandwich Tern, 2 Peregrines, 2 Wheatears, 4 Swallows, 35 Linnets, 5 Purple Sandpipers, 3 Turnstones and a surprising Collared Dove on the lighthouse rock. 11 Brent Geese were at Petit Port.
Just 2 Redshanks were roosting at St Aubin ahead of the afternoon high tide.
Evening update: The Red-rumped Swallow flew off to roost at last light, in the Fauvic direction, so is likely to be on the Island first thing tomorrow. Also seen at La Sente this evening were 6 Sand Martins, 8 Swallows, a Blue-headed Wagtail, 5 Yellow Wagtails, a Pied Wagtail, 17 White Wagtails, a Dunlin in summer plumage, a pair of Shelduck, 2 Cattle Egrets, 8 Little Egrets and at Grouville Marsh were 200 Woodpigeon.
