24.09.24 The two Great Crested Grebes currently in the Sandpits MD
A cloudy day with a little light rain this afternoon, feeling cool in fresh west-northwest wind
Just a few birds were seen passing Corbiere this morning, which included 10 Balearic Shearwaters, 4 Common Scoters, 3 Guillemots, 7 Gannets, 58 Shags, 13 Cormorants, 15 Mediterranean Gulls, 2 Black-headed Gulls, 3 Curlews, an arriving Wheatear and 10 Swallows leaving, also a Peregrine which downed an Oystercatcher into the sea, but was unable to grasp it, so the Oystercatcher departed, seemingly unharmed. At Petit Port were a Redshank, 3 Little Egrets, 12 Choughs and a Grey Seal.
In the Sandpits, Little Grebe numbers had risen to 42, with 2 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Pochard and 2 Common Sandpipers also present. On the Scrape were 8 Teal, a Snipe, a Water Rail, a Grey Heron and 7 Swallows. Meadow Pipits were inflight over St Peter
In St Aubin's Bay, 31 Brent Geese were at First Tower, 17 Redshanks, and a Grey Heron were at St Aubin, 2 Little Egrets were roosting near Bel Croute again and 87 Black-headed Gulls, 3 Bar-tailed Godwits and 3 Great Black-backed Gulls were at West Park.
On the East side of the Island, at La Rocque were 7 Grey Herons, 15 Curlews, 16 Sanderlings, 2 Dunlin, a Turnstone, 23 Grey Plovers, 4 Little Egrets, 35 Oystercatchers, 18 Swallows and a Wheatear. At Le Hocq were 11 Little Egrets, 38 Curlews, 350 Oystercatchers and another Wheatear.
At Grouville Marsh were 7 Cattle Egrets and at Queen's Valley were a Kingfisher, 21 Tufted Ducks, a Common Sandpiper, a Grey Heron and a Firecrest.
Evening update: At St Ouen's Pond this evening were a late Reed Warbler, 3 Wheatears, 5 Shoveler, 7 Marsh Harriers and a Water Rail and a Barn Owl was on Mont Matthieu.
