04.07.2024 Black-headed Gulls are drifting back to the island daily now. This smart looking individual is seen passing Corbiere this morning MD
Overnight rain had cleared by dawn this morning. leaving a breezy west-northwesterly flow and cool air.
The kick up in wind strength had a positive effect on seabirds passing Corbiere this moring, which included 5 Balearic Shearwaters, 18 Manx Shearwaters, 16 Guillemots, a Razorbill, 185 Gannets, 8 Fulmars, 6 Cormorants, 10 Sandwich Terns, 4 Mediterranean Gulls, a Black-headed Gull and 15 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, with 4 Bottle-nosed Dolphins feeding near the lighthouse. On the Corbiere headland were the family of 7 Ravens and 4 Choughs, possibly also a family group. 21 Curlews were roosting at Petit Port.
Seen from Grosnez were 3 Manx Shearwaters, 7 Gannets, a Kittiwake, and a Guillemot sitting in the sea below the light. 5 Choughs were in the area too.
On the Scrape were the family of four Shelduck and 2 juvenile Lapwings and at Kempt Tower were a pair of Stonechat and a fledged Marsh Harrier. On the small pond on Mont Matthieu was a Little Grebe. At La Pulente were 40 Black-headed Gulls including one juvenile, 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 8 Little Egrets and the pair of Shelduck, still with 3 rapidly growing young in tow.
Extra for yesterday were 6 Swifts, a Reed Warbler and Meadow Pipits feeding young behind St Ouen's Pond and the "resident" Pink-footed Goose was at Rue du Port.
