08.07.2024 Today's Black-tailed Godwit at the Scrape MD
Significant amounts of rain fell today, after a long mainly dry spell. Winds were from the south-east
A few waders appeared today, possibly due to the rain and seen at St Ouen's Pond and Scrape were a Black-tailed Godwit, the first Green Sandpiper of the Autumn passage and a small wader, glimpsed only briefly as it dropped into the Scrape, possibly a plover sp, but it was not relocated. A Greenshank was seen at Queen's Valley reservoir too, where a Little Grebe was also present. Also seen from the Scrape hide were 2 Lapwings, 2 Oystercatchers, the pair of Shelduck with it's now fledged two juveniles, 7 Little Egrets, 2 fledged juvenile Marsh Harriers, a young Cetti's Warbler, 3 Swifts, 20 Sand Martins, 5 House Martins, 15 Swallows, 10 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 13 Great Black-backed Gulls. Reed Warblers were feeding young at the Wetland Centre, as were House Sparrows. A juvenile Shoveler was on the South Canal.
At La Pulente were the two Shelduck with their 3 rapidly-growing young, 36 Black-headed Gulls and 2 Little Egrets and at Petit Port were 34 Curlews and another 6 Little Egrets. A little early passage past Corbiere, before the rain intensified, included 14 Manx Shearwaters, 7 Common Scoters, 8 Guillemots, 4 Mediterranean Gulls, 2 Black-headed Gulls, 4 Ravens and 2 Peregrines. A further 86 Black-headed Gulls and 2 Mediterranean Gulls were at St Aubin, with 9 Swifts also present.
This evening, 25 Swift were over La Pouquelaye in St Helier, while at Grands Vaux reservoir were 7 Common Sandpipers, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and a Swift.
