10.06.2024 Leaving a nest site to the East of Corbiere this morning, the first big challenge for this family of Shelduck is to negotiate a very unfriendly sea and hungry predators, on their way to safer waters in St Ouen's Bay. So far, so good! MD
A cold and cloudy morning , with a little rain as a cold front passed then some clearer air in a fresh and gusty Northwest wind.
As is shown by today's images, it was a bit of a Shelduck day on the West of the Island, with the pair on St Ouen's Pond Scrape also seen and still with two, now large, juveniles. Also on the Scrape were a Redshank, 2 adult Lapwings with one chick and 20+ Sand Martins. Around St Ouen's Pond were 8 Swifts, 14 House Martins, 8 Sand Martins, 2 Swallows, a Shoveler, a Tufted Duck and a Little Egret. This afternoon, a 25 strong flock of Swifts was near the Sandpits. On Les Blanches Banques were 5 House Martins, a Sparrowhawk, a Buzzard, a Marsh Harrier and 3 Blackcaps.
After yesterday's bumper count at Corbiere, it was far more quiet there today with counts including 35 Manx Shearwaters, 8 Balearic Shearwaters, 16 Guillemots, 6 Fulmars, 26 Gannets, 2 Cormorants, 18 Shags, 5 Kittiwakes, 17 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and a Grey Seal, with 11 Choughs and 5 Ravens on the headland.
At Beaumont Marsh yesterday were 8 House Martins, 2 Swallows, 2 Firecrests and a Great Spotted Woodpecker.
This family of Shelduck were pictured today by Tony Paintin, in "Stinky Bay" at Le Pulec, but maybe no safer as a later sighting saw only four duckings TP
