12.06.2024 A Gannet fishing at Corbiere this morning MD
A fair to fine day in a cool North-northwest wind
The status of Shelduck breeding on the West coast is still confused. A family with 9 young was seen at La Pulente this morning and a family with just 2 young was seen there too, and at Petit Port too. Hopefully these sightings refer to two different families, especially as the family at Le Pulec was not seen there.
The daily counts from Corbiere, this morning recorded 152 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Balearic Shearwaters, 15 Guillemots, 9 Fulmars, 28 Gannets, 3 Roseate Terns moving East, 6 Kittiwakes, an adult Black-headed Gull, 8 Lesser Black-backed Gulls as well as a female Marsh Harrier, a Kestrel, a flock of 8 Woodpigeons, 2 Swallows and 3 Ravens. A Buzzard was at La Rosiere.
On the East coast, 3 Swifts were feeding over Gorey Castle, and in Anneport Bay were c 400 gulls including 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls among the Herring Gulls. In Queen's Valley were a Buzzard, a Kestrel, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 4 Blackcaps and 5 Long-tailed Tits.
The annual count of Common Terns at Les Ecrehous saw 94 pairs present, just two pairs less than last year. No Roseate Terns were seen or heard though.
Yesterday evening, at Grainville Cricket Ground were a singing Firecrest, a White Wagtail and an overflying Peregrine and at Grands Vaux reservoir were 20 Swifts.
