18.04.2024 Fulmar on the North Coast MD
A cold and cloudy morning becoming fair to fine this afternoon with winds in north-northeast
Although a clear day, little by way of migrant was apparent in the cold conditions. Early seawatching from Grosnez saw 97 Gannets ( mostly following a trawler), 58 Fulmars, 24 Guillemots, 4 Razorbills, one Manx Shearwater, 15 Brent Geese going steadily East, 48 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 18 Kittiwakes, 2 Sandwich Terns, 4 Common Terns, 4 Yellow Wagtails, 2 White Wagtails, 6 Swallows, 18 Goldfinches, 15 Linnets, a Grey Heron and 14 northbound Crows. Pick of the birds at Les Landes was a ring-tailed Hen Harrier, but also seen there were 6 Wheatears, 2 Whitethroats, 4 Swallows, a Stonechat, a pair of Kestrels, 5 Buzzards and 2 Marsh Harriers.
On the Scrape were a Greenshank, a pair of Oystercatcher, a White-fronted Goose, a Barnacle Goose, 8 Lapwings, 17 Crows and 4 Swallows and on the Pond were 6 Shovelers and 10 Sand Martins. Another Wheatear was on the northside of the Pond and 6 Wheatears, a Whitethroat and a Swallow were seen at Kempt Tower, also a Grey Heron was seen in flight along the ridge behind St Ouen's Bay. Finally, in the southwest of the Island, Sand Martins were busy excavating in the Sandpits while at Corbiere were Wheatear and a two Ravens.
A small Heron - possibly a Night Heron, was seen at a private pond in the centre of the Island, while 12 House Martins were over Gorey Village early on and fledged Robins were by the Co-op at Five Oaks.
At La Sente were 10 Yellow Wagtails, a Pied Wagtail, 10 White Wagtails, 2 Black-headed Gulls, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, 2 Shelduck, 21 Little Egrets and 4 Swallows, and 2 Black-tailed Godwits were seen on the rocks at La Rocque.
Evening update: On the Scrape were 6 Whimbrels and a Snipe, while around the Frances le Sueur Centre in St Ouen's Bay were a Reed Warbler and 2 Cetti's Warblers. On the north side of the Pond were a Willow Warbler and 3 Reed Warblers while at St Aubin were 76 Brent Geese.
Yesterday evening, a Short-eared Owl was seen again over Grouville Common.
