22.10.2024 Woodpigeons and Stock Doves passing over Noirmont this morning MD
A fair day with good sunny spells and a moderate west-southwest wind
There was some good coverage of visible migration spots today, after yesterday's poor weather. Seen over Victoria Tower were a Water vPipit, 2 Swallows, 222 Starlings, 6 Song Thrushes, 5 Redwings, 72 Chaffinches, 26 Goldfinches, 6 Greenfinches, 3 Siskins, 33 Meadow Pipits, 34 Woodpigeons, 11 Stock Doves, a Grey Wagtail and 17 Black-headed Gulls, also a Firecrest, a Blackcap and a Chiffchaff.
Seen at Corbiere were 270 Starlings, 495 Chaffinches, 40 Woodpigeons, 2 Swallows, 2 Stonechats, 2 Peregrines and a Sparrowhawk.
The bulk of the Woodpigeons opted to route via Noirmont, with 7,155 seen through the morning, a large number given the still early date for this species to be moving South. Also passing Noirmont were 19 Stock Doves, 4 Swallows, 5 Skylarks, 4 Song Thrushes, 114 Starlings, 24 Pied Wagtails, 295 Meadow Pipits, 355 Chaffinches, 263 Linnets, 49 Goldfinches, and 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Also there were 5 Stonechats, 2 Dartford Warblers, 6 Robins, 2 Blackbirds, 2 Chiffchaffs, 2 Sparrowhawks, a Peregrine, 2 Kestrels, 3 Buzzards and a Marsh Harrier.
At La Sente were 27 Little Egrets, 31 Grey Herons and 5 Pied Wagtails and on Grouville Common was a pair of Cirl Bunting. Seen from Seymour in Grouville Bay were 300 Brent Geese and 5 Great Crested Grebes. At La Rocque were 11 Little Egrets, 30 Turnstones, 18 Redshanks, 12 Grey Plovers, 24 Sanderlings, 41 Oystercatchers and a Bar-tailed Godwit. On the outside of St Aubin's Fort were 26 Curlews. 19 Cormorants were on Grands Vaux reservoir.
In St Ouen's Bay, at the Sandpits, were 23 Cormorants, 24 Little Grebes, a Great Crested Grebe, a Little Egret, 8 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 4 Great Black-backed Gulls and a Stonechat. near the Cutty Sark were 34 Ringed Plovers and a Chough and on Mont Matthieu were a Firecrest, a Goldcrest and a flock of 7 Long-tailed Tits. In Les Ormes Valley were 3 Firecrests, 2 Chiffchaffs, a Bullfinch, another flock of Long-tailed Tits, a Sparrowhawk, 4 Buzzards and a Kestrel. A Kingfisher was at Petit Port.
Evening update: On the North side of St Ouen's Pond this evening were a Short-eared Owl, a Snipe, a Reed Bunting, 8 Chiffchaffs, 12 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Skylarks and 2 Stonechats.
