24.12.2024 Snipe by the Wetland Centre at St Ouen's Pond MD
Overcast conditions with hill fog through the day was the recipe for Christmas Eve, but very mild in a moderate westerly wind
A surprising number of seabirds were seen from Corbiere in the less foggy moments, which included 127 Gannets, a Red-breasted Merganser, a Fulmar, 28 Guillemots, 10 Razorbills, 38 Shags, 5 Cormorants, 179 Kittiwakes, a Mediterranean Gull, a Common Gull, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, 2 Black-headed Gulls, 40 Great Black-backed Gulls, a Grey Heron, 2 Little Egrets and with one Porpoise also seen. In Petit Port Bay were 27 Curlews, 24 Brent Geese and 3 Little Egrets.
On St Ouen's Pond were 29 Teal, 10 Shovelers, a Little Grebe, 25 Lapwings, 17 Snipe, a Stonechat and 2 Chiffchaffs, one possibly an Eastern race bird. At Sands Slip were 46 Ringed Plovers, 14 Dunlin and 11 Sanderlings and at La Saline were 10 Brent Geese.
At Rue a Don in Grouville were 51 Cattle Egrets while at La Sente were 310 Brent Geese, 2 Marsh Harriers, 27 Redshanks, 35 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Ravens and 14 Grey Herons. Around La Rocque were 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, 4 Redshanks, 17 Brent Geese, 22 Curlews, a Kingfisher, a Great Northern Diver, a Black-necked Grebe and 2 Pied Wagtails.
At St Aubin were 115 Brent Geese, 25 Redshanks, 17 Turnstones and a Grey Wagtail.
