30.07.2024 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at La Rosiere MD
Another warm and sunny day in a northeast breeze, but with the threat of overnight showers to come.
It was very quiet at Corbiere this morning, in stark contrast to yesterday and despite similar weather conditions. Counts in three hours included a Pomarine Skua, 9 Common Scoters, a single Manx Shearwater, 37 Balearic Shearwaters, 3 Fulmars, 31 Gannets, 14 Cormorants, at least 500 Herring Gulls moving northwards in flocks, 23 Black-headed Gulls, 6 Mediterranean Gulls, 6 Mediterranean Gulls, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, a Curlew and 2 Peregrines together.
On Les Ecrehous yesterday were 2 Willow Warblers and good numbers of Sandwich Terns, but the Roseate Terns were not in evidence. Also yesterday evening at St Ouen's Pond were 500 Swallows and 20 Sand Martins flying in to roost and 4 Snipe, 2 Grey Herons, a juvenile Marsh Harrier, a just fledged juvenile Reed Warbler and 2 Willow Warblers.
Below: Mediterranean Gulls are passing through the Islands in good numbers now, although not many colour-ringed birds have been seen yet. This individual was newly ringed on 20th May this year in Flanders, Belgium ( white 3P9P) and was photographed on the 26th July at Petit Port. MD
