03.10.2024 A different view of Linnets, this time in formation over Noirmont today MD
A showery trough passed across the Island mid-morning leaving a clear day in a fresh northeast wind
It was a busy day for migrants at Noirmont today, especially after the showers cleared. Seen through the morning were 4 Merlins, none stopping to feed, a Peregrine, 3 Sparrowhawks, 3 Buzzards, 2 Kestrels, 1,652 Swallows and still passing when the count stopped, 404 House Martins, a Sand Martin, 3 Skylarks, 3 Song Thrushes, 1,280 Meadow Pipits, a Yellow Wagtail, 37 alba Wagtails ( mostly Pied Wagtails), 638 Linnets, 8 Goldfinches, 9 Chaffinches, 2 Greenfinches, 5 Starlings, 5 Brent Geese, a Ringed Plover, 23 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 2 Ravens, a Grey Heron and at least 5 Chiffchaffs on the ground.
At the Wetland Centre were 6 Teal, 4 Pochard, 11 Shovelers, a Wheatear, a Merlin, a Sparrowhawk, 3 Marsh Harriers, a pale-phased Buzzard, 2 Water Rails, 25 Swallows, 4 House Martins and a few Meadow Pipits, while on the Scrape were 17 Teal, a Lapwing, 2 Grey Herons, 2 Water Rails, a Kingfisher, a Sparrowhawk 23 Linnets and 2 Choughs. A Cetti's Warbler was in song there too.
At Petit Port this afternoon were 31 Curlews, a Turnstone and 4 Little Egrets. Seen from Sands Slip in St Ouen's Bay were 20 Ringed Plovers, a Wheatear and 6 alba Wagtails.
In Queen's Valley were 27 Tufted Duck, a Kingfisher, 150 House Martins and 120 Swallows, and seen from Le Saie on the northeast coast were 9 passing Brent Geese, 2 Grey Herons and a Raven. Early on this morning, 4 House Martins were in flight over Vallee des Vaux. On Grouville Common were a Redstart, 30 Chiffchaffs, a Sparrowhawk and a Marsh Harrier.
Back to last night and a Song Thrush was heard in flight over Vallee des Vaux.
Following on from yesterday, the bulls which went walkabout at Noirmont, have been punished by being put in an electric fenced part the large field at Noirmont! At least that may be beneficial to the birds, as less dog walkers are likely to walk through the field disturbing them.
