04.10.2024 Another Swallow passes Noirmont this morning MD
A fine day with some high cloud but good visibility in a moderate southeast wind.
Another interesting morning for migrants passing Noirmont, although les frantic than yesterday. Among the birds passing were 4 Lapwings, 6 Skylarks, 19 Song Thrushes ( mostly dropping into cover), 355 Swallows, 51 House Martins, 3 Sand Martins, 325 Meadow Pipits, a Grey Wagtail, 9 alba Wagtails, 17 Cormorants, 6 Grey Herons, a Little Egret, 101 Linnets, 43 Goldfinches, 5 Chaffinches, 2 Sparrowhawks, a male Marsh Harrier heading off, 10 Choughs, 2 Ravens and 4 local Buzzards including a pale bird. On the ground were a Whitethroat, a Willow Warbler, 5 Chiffchaffs, a Stonechat, 5+ Robins and yet again, a singing Dartford Warbler. Offshore were 15 Mediterranean Gulls, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, a Kittiwake, a Common Gull and one auk sp.
Over Vallee des Vaux early morning were a single Lapwing, 30 Swallows and 20 House Martins all heading East. Swallows were also passing over Mont au Pretre, where 4 Buzzards were soaring together and 100+ Swallows were seen over St Catherine's.
At Petit Port were 32 Curlews, 7 Turnstones, a Kingfisher and 28 Mediterranean Gulls and a Peregrine was at Corbiere. On Beauport Common were 2 Dartford Warblers and a Stonechat. In Les Ormes Valley were 6 Firecrests, 2 Goldcrests, 10 Chiffchaffs, a Blackcap, a Bullfinch, 6 Song Thrushes and yet more Swallows passing overhead.
At the Scrape, a Sparrowhawk was seen to take a Cetti's Warbler which was in flight at low level and a Great Spotted Woodpecker was on the South Canal. Later today, 2 Great White Egrets dropped in on the Scrape.
At Grouville Marsh were 20 Chiffchaffs and a Sparrowhawk, while at the North end of Queen's Valley Reservoir were 150 Swallows, 80 House Martins, a Grey Wagtail, 20 Chaffinches, 14 Song Thrushes and 4 Chiffchaffs with a Stonechat in a maize field nearby.
Evening update: A visit to Les Ecrehous saw 11 Swallows, 6 Linnets, 10 Chiffchaffs, a Wren, a Song Thrush, 10+ Rock Pipits, a Kestrel hunting, a Redstart, an alba Wagtail, 3 Grey Herons, 4 Little Egrets, 200+ Oystercatchers, a Ringed Plover, 6 Cormorants, a Grey Seal a Peacock butterfly and 2 Large Whites.
In the garden at Red Houses this afternoon were this Hummingbird Hawk Moth, 6 Red Admirals and a Peacock Butterfly, all feeding on Buddleia and ivy plants.
