11.10.2024 The Horned Lark in St Ouen's Bay this afternoon MD
A fair day in light south-easterly winds, feeling mild at 16c
On a day which was busy with birds, the bird of the day was a Horned Lark (Shorelark) found near the Cutty Sark in St Ouen's Bay, this only the 8th record for Jersey and the first for fourteen years! Also in the same area were 3 Wheatears and 2 Pied Wagtails.
It was a very busy morning for migrants at Noirmont, with over 4,500 counted through the morning. Included in those were 2 Merlins, 2 Hobbies, a Peregrine, 3 Sparrowhawks, 4 Buzzards and 5 Marsh Harriers. Among the passerines on the move were a Ring Ouzel, 6 Song Thrushes, 24 Skylarks, 267 Swallows, 2 Sand Martins, 491 House Martins, 69 alba Wagtails, 1,325 Meadow Pipits, 46 Siskins, a Brambling, 515 Linnets, 827 Chaffinches, 5 Greenfinches, 49 Goldfinches, 763 Woodpigeons, 5 Stock Doves, 3 House Sparrows and on the ground, a Whitethroat, a Blackcap, 3 Dartford Warblers, 11 Stonechats, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 10 Jackdaws, 2 Choughs and 2 Ravens. Also passing were singles of both dark-breasted and pale-breasted Brent Goose, a skein of 7 geese, almost certainly the 7 Barnacle Geese also seen passing inland at La Coupe, 33 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 45 Black-headed Gulls, 5 Mediterranean Gulls and 5 Gannets.
Seen passing La Coupe this morning were 7 Barnacle Geese, 79 Brent Geese, 8 Common Scoters, 43 Black-headed Gulls and 2 Mediterranean Gulls. At La Rocque were 3 Grey Herons, 11 Little Egrets, 3 Redshanks, 4 Greenshanks, 88 Oystercatchers , a Wheatear and 5 Swallows. A short count of Swallows over La Rue au Blanc saw 75 pass in 15 minutes.
Chaffinches were moving over Beauport Common and Gorselands with 2 Stonechats and 30 House Martins also seen at the former.
At the Scrape in St Ouen's Bay were 7 Teal, 6 Buzzards, 5 Choughs and a Wheatear and over Mont Matthieu were a Grey Heron, a pair of Choughs, a pair of Jays and several Goldfinches.
At West Park in St Aubin's Bay were 38 Brent Geese, 8 of them pale-bellied Brent, 3 Bar-tailed Godwits, a Kingfisher, 134 Black-headed Gulls, 9 Turnstones, 9 Ringed Plovers, 2 Common Sandpipers and 3 Curlews.
This evening, at Le Catillon, were 520 Swallows, 20 House Martins and a Stonechat.
Extras from yesterday include Redwings heard over Beauport last night, 2 Long-eared Owls seen over Mont Matthieu and at Sorel, 2 Stonechats, Chiffchaffs, a Peregrine and 4 Ravens.
