21.12.2024. Brent Geese on St Ouen's Pond Scrape MD
A blustery and showery day, mild at 13c in a strong west-southwest wind
Good numbers of birds were sheltering at La Sente this morning, which included 32 Grey Herons, 20 Little Egrets, 325 Brent Geese, 211 Black-headed Gulls, a Common Gull, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, 16 Herring Gulls, 2 Mediterranean Gulls and 12 Pied Wagtails.
In St Catherine's Woods were 6 Redwings, 2 Goldcrests, a Bullfinch and one Grey Heron flying over.
Birds moving offshore past Corbiere in the first hour of daylight included a Black-throated Diver, 8 Razorbills, 2 Guillemots, 13 Gannets, 9 Kittiwakes, 15 Shags, a Peregrine and also a pod of 6 Common Dolphins. Passing Grosnez later on were a Red-throated Diver, 17 Guillemots, 11 Razorbills, 16 Gannets, 19 Fulmars, 8 Kittiwakes, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, 33 Great Black-backed Gulls and a Harbour Porpoise. 36 Brent Geese were at Petit Port.
In St Ouen's Bay, 66 Ringed Plovers were at Sands Slip and a flock of 40 Starlings was on the Five Mile Road.
Elsewhere: at Brickfield Lane were 700+ Chaffinches, a Goldfinch, a Grey Wagtail, 6 Redwings and a Chiffchaff, a Grands Vaux were 14 Tufted Ducks, at Montpellier in Trinity were 18 Redwings, in the Jersey Cider Orchard was a Fieldfare and at Cowley Farm were 4 Cattle Egrets.
